The League of Beauties

Brief description

The book is about 12 beautiful girls who take part in a beauty competition. There are no judges, the girls vote for each other, so they have to do their best - which can also mean do the worst things to the others - to convince everybody to vote for them. The League of Beauties is basically a TV Show. The contestants were signed in without knowing about it, so it's more of a challenge. It takes place in a little castle in Great Britain. Every three days the girls choose one to vote for and the one with the most votes becomes the winner and leaves the competition to be a model, actress or whatever she wants to be. The main idea is, how important a good appearance is for women nowadays and how far they are willing to go to be the best. In the end we discover that not everything is as it seems. The book is supposed to teach us a lesson about being too self-centered and obsessed with our appearance. I actually like to call my book shallow and deep.

The characters

Lisabeth Allen - She's the only "normal" one. At first she doesn't enjoy being a part of the competition, but then she finds some really close friends there. She hadn't cared about fashion and good looks before she came to the League, but the competition changed her opinion and her whole life. She ended up in a madhouse after the competition and she is retelling the story of what had brought her there.

Dianna Harrisson - She shared the room with Lisabeth during the competition. She's very kind and loyal and she's the best friend Lisabeth had among the girls.

Irena Dovermann - She's the head of the whole competition. She's strict and she recommends the girls to act naughty in order to win.

Jackie - He's Lisabeth's love interest.

Wendy - She works as a nurse at the madhouse, she is very nice.

An excerpt from the book

I didn't use to spend much time in front of the mirror. But here... There were mirrors everywhere, so you had to live in front of them.

And what kind of mirrors they were! Heartless, cruel, critical. They detected every mistake, no matter how small. On the other hand, they were merciful, since they gave you the chance to get rid of the beauty defect and become perfect. And they were certainly merciful compared to some people.

This was a totally different world than the one I had known. Not being perfect meant being an outsider. And I didn't want to be one.
